This is a great product, I do not see much difference between 10 and 2007 though. There is a bit of learning curve involved if yoou are use to previous versions of office, pre 2007. I would be happier if it included Outlook. Amazon is great!

Just bought and installed Office 2010 on the new computer that I just bought and it is great. Love all of the features and the ribbon interface. I beta tested this before I bought it and loved it then and now. The all time best office suite around in my book. Wish is had Outlook in the home and student version, but I use Microsoft Live Mail and it is great too. Very highly recommended!

Office 2010 is different from Office 2007. Word and Excel, Power Point and One Note are upgraded for the better in 2010. I have found they are easier and more efficient to use. As anytime you are doing an upgrade you have to learn the changes and adjust. Not really difficult, just different. Switching from Office 2007 to Office 2010 should be really pretty easy. I didn't have problems, but just be aware there are some differences.
I use Word, Excel and One Note daily in a business setting and I appreciate the upgrades. I don't think I need to go into all the details as they have been discussed plenty by others. I appreciate the upgrades and it makes working a little bit more streamlined.

I upgraded from Office 2000 to Office 2007 two years ago. I have now upgraded to Office 2010 through the Home & Student version. My machine is a small Dell notebook running Windows XP.
Installation from the DVD was very simple, and took about 15 minutes to run without need for much babysitting. There were no problems. Impressively, all of my settings from Office 2007 were carried forward into the Office 2010 installation.
Windows 2010 continues with the ribon from 2007, but improves it by adding a menu line and allowing the click/double click to expand the menu beyond the ribon. I had no problem finding everything I needed.
I'm sure there are a few super-power-user improvements under the hood, but to me - an average user - 2010 generally seemed the same as 2007.
If you are already using 2007, I wouldn't see much need to upgrade. There really are very few new features - and most of those would only be used by 2% of users.
Be forewarned that the Home & Student version of Office 2010 does not include Microsoft Outlook 2010, which must be added separately.

I first purchased ms office in 2000. I have used works and solutions, but wanted more power. I'm not working, so my buying office 2010 might seem insane to jo public. I bought inside out books back then to learn the software. I didn't expect the software to offer much help. Also, I made a deliberate choice to buy THE DISC version of the program this time. download things aren't my thing-philosophy and otherwise. Well, I am STUNNED, and not for the good.
My ex and I started with the micros in 1980. Our 1st computer had prob the first version of word perfect out there, if not one of the first. I had a technical for it, but it was bare bones. I grew alot then.
I enjoyed using office 2000. Let me continue by saying that I am excited about all the features and choices added to ms office since then.
I purchased a complete suite of riley publishing books on 2010 office. And as helpful as they are, THIS IS NOT THE SAME OFFICE.
I feel like I am back to the old wordperfect days. The formatting is very very challenging, unless you have a great deal of patience with software(which I do, since I'm self taught on the computer, through trial and error and many computer books and going on os system #5 for me). One of the reasons I went ahead and purchased this high end software is I lost the use of works, which came with my computer, and didn't want to spend $75 or so to take it to someone and figure out why it hates my works.
I' sure the power of this program is there, but I'm having a heck of a time breaking it all down to get to even a medium level of proficiency.
For customers buying a PC who need Office for their new PC only, and don't need to upgrade other home PCs, a Product Key Card provides another way to purchase Office with a PC.

I've owned Mac's since the original 128K Mac and Microsoft Products have always had integration issues in the Mac world. This version of Office is no exception. I work a lot on PC's at work, so I'm used to that environment. In the Mac version of Office, menus are not where you think they might be. Some of the most useful ones in Word and Excel are still part of the Mac menu bar, though there is another Excel or Work menu bar. Many of the formatting controls are on a separate window and in headings you would not expect. So, here's hoping (once again) that someday Microsoft creates a truly integrated Mac Office.
~ August 29, 2010 ~ Greg Cox said:Not bad but could be better
Overall, still pretty good but the older version seemed more user friendly. I liked the tab setup that the pc version had a lot more. It also seems that the mac version can be a little sluggish at times. Seeing how my mac is only about 3 months old, I have to attribute this to the software, not the computer. That being said, if I had to do it over again, I probably would have given iWork a shot instead. Back when I was primarily a pc user, I had an older copy for windows xp. I have to say I like it better than the mac version. The interface was much more visually pleasing which may not really seem like a big deal, but as a heavy office user it is something nicer to look at for extended periods. Also, I liked the layout of the pc version better as well. Using the tool palette can be a little tedious because it somehow finds a way to always get in the way.

First of all, I got this through amazon at a great price ($109), so that made me happy. Secondly it arrived within a week which made me even happier. Thirdly, loading it to my 2005 mac was a cinch, which, you guessed it, took me to the third level of happiness. Anyway, I have already started using Word,Powerpoint and Excel and I am glad to report that they work great! So far no problems, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I hope that whatever bugs that were reported earlier have already been fixed.

Unfortunately Blizzard is no longer about games.
Too many years of running WOW (aka a money-printing machine) has ruined the company.
Or maybe it was all the changes to their corporate structure.
Whatever the cause, making you sign onto the internet over and over to verify your copy, no LAN game, Uber Region-Locking and charging $60 for what is effectively 1/3 of the complete game is unacceptable.
It means Blizzard has finally become a company - not about the games or the fans or even the casual customers, they are purely about squeezing every last cent out of every fan-boy they can dupe into buying their products.
Please don't take my word for it.
Research this game.
Make sure you understand completely the limitations that Blizzard tries to hide.
Buying this abomination will only encourage them to produce more.
Help them see the error in their ways.
Boycott this game.

I'v seen so many people writing bad reviews for this game, that I really don't think have even played it yet. They just go off what they read or hear.
So here we go, during the install process, you watch a narrative slideshow on what happened in SC1 and broodwar. Which I thought was pretty cool as it's been a long time since iv beat SC1. Game loads up you create your online persona, which is used in single player to save achievements too. Upon reading up about just 1 side of the campaign I wasn't overly thrilled nor did I go into this with high expectations. That being said 1 race is plenty, it took about 34 hours to beat the campaign, and there's several different missions I need to go back and play through the counterpart choice. There's different paths you can take to unlock different units, technologies, or allies.
There's great character development, it doesnt force you to it, but once your i think it was like the 3rd mission you have a command center and you can delve deeper and talk to people if you want. The single player campaign i would give 5 stars, great voice acting, awesome story, doesnt have a cliffhanger ending, yet I look forward to the next campaign.
I read somewhere about someone complaining about lack of units, and the next campaigns won't be as interesting, like i stated above the units, technologies are different, quite a bit different in single player than there online counterparts. ex; first time playing online I thought where is my flame turret!
Online could use some work, all I play are custom maps, and i like how they fill quickly if you join them, or you can host thru bnet, without worrying about portforwarding or any firewall issues. While there working on the layout and lobby to include chat and channel features, that will be nice. Now I do hate the autostart and 30 second countdown on games joined, which is why this has 4 stars and not 5. But that's easily remedied if you create your own game.

I'm extremely surprised that a company as beloved as Blizzard would throw so many restrictions at their long standing customer base. There are limits to how much abuse people will put up with before that taste that they leave in their mouth becomes to sour to accept.
I'm not going to write about all the flaws as there are plenty of reviews that shine light on them. One in particular that affects myself and up to another 400,000 people in the U.S. Army is that Blizzard in their infinite wisdom decided that they should tether this game to the internet. So now when I'm deployed I won't be able to play a game that I bought legally. Guess I'll have to look for some illegal means of playing it and next time i won't waste money trying to pay for nothing.

I am a fan of the first starcraft, this made me want to buy the second when it came out. The new one is much better than the first, cinematic scenes throughout campaign are much more common than in the first. Also, with the new [...] system, I get matched up against challenging opponents that aren't necessarily more skilled than I am, meaning every match is for the most part is fair. A major problem with the original starcraft is I would log on, and within seconds be told "Oh I got the noob on my team" and my teammate would immediately bail. Because I am not forced to play with people at different skill levels the game is considerably less one sided than in the original.
Campaign can be adjusted based on skill level. In the first one I had difficulty with it, I felt it was less newcomer friendly. The new campaign difficult levels are accurate.
I love the game, better graphics, more units, campaign is so fun I actually want to play it a second time.

Norton keeps getting better. They recently signed a big deal with comcast where you get norton protection for free if you are a comcast subscriber. I am not sure if it is the same package as this one however. My problems were fixed by reinstalling NIS 2010 in 7 following my upgrade solved that problem. In Windows 7, 2010 consumes more RAM, apparently, than when it runs in Vista. NIS 2010 tells you reputation-based information on all files you download from the internet, as well as if they are free of malware. It appears to have live updates available about every 25 minutes. NIS 2010 installs a search toolbar in your default browser that does its antiphishing function. You can delete it if you want. really like it! It works great, and it runs in the background well (has silent mode for full-screen applications). Supposedly NIS versions 2008 and 2009 will not work in Windows 7. On upgrading to Windows 7 from Windows Vista while NIS security is installed, the SONAR technology feature (uses reputation as well as virus definitions in scans) is a problem in that it seems to shut off too often. I had to uninstall the program and reinstall it after Windows 7 was installed per the helpful customer service people at norton. Norton suggested a fix involving first live updating and if that didn't work, restarting the system. That didn't work, since Norton reverted to the insecure state after reboot.

This latest version of NIS 2010 is very good. Good detection of suspisicous files, and never get's in the way of the system. Low on ressources. Only downside is a bit long scan time, but that's to be expected, when you have LOTS of files (Steam games). Unfortunately it CAN delete files which it shouldn't, but that's a rare occasion, and you can add those files to be excluded from realtime scanning. All in all I would rate this 4/5 (4,5/5, if that was possible). Not perfect, but in my book, better than the other suites I have tested.

Installed quickly, and the phone call to register took about 30 seconds. They didn't try to sell me everything under the sun, like other reviewers said. I've used QB for 10+ years in my business as a bookkeeper for several clients, so I'm familiar with it and have very few complaints about the actual program. I previously used QB 2005, and was very happy with the product. I have a small business, we don't accept credit cards, and we don't use QB for invoicing. Our only use for the product is to provide our financial reports to our accountant for assistance in preparing our tax returns.
I recently upgraded to Windows 7, and I was unable to get QB 2005 to install correctly. I even tried to install a virtual version of Windows XP back on to the Windows 7 machine, for the purposes of running QB 2005, and I still couldn't get it to install.
In the end, I purchased QB 2010 and it installed fine. I don't think I will have a use for any of the additional features of the product, so the reason for my purchase was simply to get access to my data on Windows 7.
It would have been nice if Intuit offered a "patch" to allow their products to be compatible with Windows 7.
That said, the software works find, and hopefully I won't have to upgrade again for another 5 years.

I ordered Norton 360 4.0 at considerable cost savings over renewing my Norton service online. It meant installing it myself, but that was very easy and fast.
Great product - great service!
~ September 3, 2010 ~ Sam J. Addeo from Atlanta, Georgia said:I think they want to lose customers
Over a lot of years I have used Norton products. In the past Utilities, at times, caused more harm than good but recently, since my Dell came with a subscription, I was happy with it and I renewed it. This year the annoying screens from Symantic popped up telling me I had to renew. When I went to renew my subscription with Symantic they were going to charge me five dollars less than the whole product cost on their own site. It did not make sense. I looked around and found that it was much cheaper on Amazon and that for the whole version. Today the subscription expired and when I turned on my computer, all of Norton 360 products were off, not just the update features. In the past the basic product worked but you remained at risk for infections from a new virus. Now firewall, anti-virus, id protection and all else in the program is off. I might be wrong but it seems like 1) they do not give a damn about loyal customers and 2) the fact that they want $59 from me for a subscription and turned off all components seems to be underhanded. I know I can buy version 4/360 for $40 on Amazon but what about next year? I am seriously tempted to just switch but who knows. I also agree with the gentleman who complained about symantics customer service. I'm not too crazy about the fact that congress let all these jobs go overseas but I don't think I'd be half as pissed if they spoke english I could hear and understand. Tonight getting through was horrible.....it wasn't the fault of the people on customer service, you can tell they are trying, its the system. Ok, I'm finished.....a hundred years from now there better be a plaque for all of us who were pioneers and who funded the development of the personal computer.

The Norton 360 4.0.1 is really nice... Has good features and offers a comprehensive protection from all kinds of threat. I doubt that the previous version was not so good because our laptop had a malware threat which was not being detected by the previous one. ultimately we had to buy anti-malware to remove the threat. Would definitely recommend this version!!

~ September 4, 2010 ~ Margaux Paschke from New York said:MORE PLUSES THEN MINUSES
I had purchased a new HP computer that had Winbdows 7 and although the pc had issues and was returned, I did like Windows 7 while I had it. I had issues with several new pcs so I thought I would purchase the Windows 7 upgrade for my old pc. So far I am happy and feel it has more pluses then minuses. There are several reviews written by more tech savy reviewers so I will concentrate on my view of the good and bad points:
GOOD POINTS
1. Has made my computer run much faster and cut my boot time in half.
2. I love the two windows feature where I can open two programs and have them run side by side. I had a problem getting this to work at first but once mastered, a favorite.
3. When you have several items open under the same program, the tool bar at the bottom allows a preview of them so you can access the one you want with one click instead of opening the program and going through them until you get the one you want. Very cool.
4. Home Group allows you to easily share photos, music, etc. between your home computers.
5. Windows 7 Media Center allows for easy tv viewing and recording but your pc must have a tv tuner to access this feature.
BAD POINTS
1. Does not play well with older programs. Not everything is Windows 7 compatible.
2. My Mp3 player (Creative) needed a new driver installed to work on Windows 7 - this is a work in progress as issues keep popping up which prevent me from connecting my MP3 player and using it the way it was meant like I did on Windows XP.
3. The automatic updates are not always a good thing. After the last update, my screen size shrunk and I had to reset my monitor.
Deciding which version to purchse might take a moment. The Professional version provides for an easier connection to company networks, a back-up to network option, and more importantly, the ability to run certain programs in a Windows XP mode - the $157 price difference was the deciding factor for me. Although in hindsight, the Windows XP mode might have been worth it... Please note that if you purchase Windows 7 software, you receive customer support for the first year but if you purchase a new computer with Windows 7 pre-loaded, there is no support without a fee of $59.99.
I do not regret upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7, although the new configuration involved a learning curve. I have been using it for a few weeks and I am still getting used to it but happy overall. I find myself more comfortable using a computer with Windows XP but Windows 7 is the future and it looks promising.

I thought I'd never want to switch from XP after seeing Vista. But I finally decided that I should at least give 7 a try. It's great. I'm running it on a Pentium D with 2gb of RAM and it works great. I was afraid it would be slow, but it's just as fast as XP, if not faster. All of my old programs that I used on XP still work. Good job, Microsoft!

I puechased this from the vendor on May 4th, 2010. The order arrived within a few days via US Mail. I chose this vendor because it was a good price, and also advertised as eligable for the free upgrade to Office Ultimate 2010. I've been fighting with Microsoft for a week to get the upgrade. However, even though the product was purchased during the correct timeframe, according to the Product Code and Product Key, this is not eligable for the upgrade.
Microsft has verified my version is not upgradable, so the vendor lied. Will contact Amazon to see what they can do, but just wanted to let others know that the vendor ripped me off with false advertising.

After a long time, i finally decided to install this Snow Leopard OS, hoping that it will boost the speed of my old Leopard OS... It turned out that it did increase the speed, but i think just by a little bit. I particularly like the trackpad handwriting feature, it allows user to write chinese characters using the trackpad, awesome!
However, there are certain stuff that make Snow Leopard OS more complicated... While i was trying to install Symantec Antivirus, it won't allow me unless i have Rosetta installed in my mac... So basically i have to go back and reinstall the Snow Leopard OS, select the "Rosetta" option during installation and then you can do the Antivirus... Leopard OS does not have to do all this... Another thing, i experienced very severe lagging using the new Safari browser that comes with the Snow Leopard OS, i don't know whether its just me, or everybody else, but i couldn't tolerate it anymore and now i'm using Google Chrome as my default browser...
In terms of speed, Snow Leopard does indeed boost up its quality, but in regard to user-friendliness, it needs some improvements. But overall, i'm pretty satisfied with my Snow Leopard.

And the OS communicates with the hardware to deliver incredible battery life by spinning down the hard drive when it's inactive, by intelligently deciding whether the CPU or GPU is best for a task, and by automatically dimming the screen in low-light conditions.
Elegant interface and stunning graphics.
The most striking feature of a Mac is its elegant user interface, made possible by graphics technologies that are built to leverage the advanced graphics processor in your Mac. These technologies provide the power for things like multiway chatting, real-time reflections, and smooth animations. Fonts on the screen look beautiful and extremely readable. A soft drop shadow makes it clear at a glance which window is active and which ones are in the background. You can preview just about any type of file using Quick Look, and because the previews are high resolution, you can actually read the text. Built-in support for the PDF format means you can view or create PDFs from almost any application in the system.
Highly secure by design.
Mac OS X doesn't get PC viruses. And with virtually no effort on your part, Mac OS X protects itself from other malicious applications. It was built for the Internet in the Internet age, offering a variety of sophisticated technologies that help keep you safe from online threats. Because every Mac ships with a secure configuration, you don't have to worry about understanding complex settings. Even better, it won't slow you down with constant security alerts and sweeps. And Apple responds quickly to online threats and automatically delivers security updates directly to your Mac.
Built for compatibility.
The versatility and power of Mac OS X make it compatible in almost any environment, including Windows networks. It works with virtually all of today's digital cameras, printers, and other peripherals without the need to manually download separate drivers. It opens popular file types such as JPG, MP3, and Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents. In addition, Mac OS X includes built-in support for the industry-standard PDF format, so you can read and create PDFs from almost any application in the system--perfect for sharing work with colleagues whether they use a Mac or a PC. If you want to run Windows on your Mac, you can do that, too. And Mac OS X Snow Leopard is the only operating system with built-in support for the latest version of Microsoft Exchange Server, so you can use your Mac at home and at work and have all your messages, meetings, and contacts in one place.
Innovation for everyone.
Mac OS X comes standard with a wide range of assistive technologies that help people with disabilities experience what the Mac has to offer--including many features you won't find in other operating systems at any price. For example, the built-in VoiceOver screen-reading technology makes it possible for those who are blind or have low vision to control their computer using key commands or gestures on a Multi-Touch trackpad. Mac OS X also offers out-of-the-box support for over 40 braille displays, including Bluetooth displays, and many other accessibility features, such as dynamic full-screen magnification, playback of closed captions, and a scalable screen.
Reliable to the core.
The core of Mac OS X is built on the same ultrareliable UNIX foundation that powers industrial-strength servers, helping to ensure that your computing experience remains free from system crashes and compromised performance. Even upgrading your Mac to the next version of Mac OS X is reliable and easy. It checks your applications to make sure they're compatible and sets aside any programs known to be incompatible. If a power outage interrupts your installation, it can start again without losing any data. Best of all, upgrading doesn't require reformatting your drive; you can keep all your compatible applications, files, and settings. And if something goes wrong when you're using your Mac, Time Machine is there to keep automatic backups of everything on your drive.
Fully featured, fully loaded.
Mac OS X comes in a single, full-featured version that includes a large collection of beautifully designed applications. They not only let you surf the web, conduct video and text chats, manage your contacts, and accomplish other day-to-day tasks--they also work together to make you more productive and let you have more fun.

Dock + Finder
The Dock in Mac OS X provides fast, one-click access to frequently used applications, folders, files, and even downloads from the Internet. The Finder makes working with your files and documents as easy as browsing your iTunes library.
What is the Dock?
The Dock at the bottom of the screen gives you quick access to your most frequently used applications, files, and folders. With its visually appealing, high-resolution icons, the Dock practically begs to be clicked. When you do, your applications spring to life instantly, and a bright signal tells you which applications are open. You can also use Exposé from the Dock to instantly see all the open windows for an application.
You can set the Dock to remain at the bottom of the screen, framing your desktop picture and always visible. Or you can set it to tuck itself away, ready to return when you move the pointer to the bottom of the screen.

What's in your Dock.
The Dock comes loaded with icons for many of the applications included with your Mac--Dashboard, Mail, iCal, iPhoto, and so on. But as you'd expect, it's easy to customize. To add a new application or folder, just grab it from the Finder and move it onto the Dock. The Dock expands to make room for the new item, and if you have a lot of items, the icons scale to fit on your desktop. Removing and rearranging items is just as simple: Click and drag.
Stacks for your stuff
A stack is a Dock item that gives you fast, direct access to folders and files. When you click a stack, the files within spring from the Dock in a fan or a grid, depending on the number of items (or the preference you set). Mac OS X starts you off with premade stacks for downloads, applications, and documents. The Downloads stack automatically captures files you download from Safari, Mail, and iChat. The Applications stack gives you fast access to all your applications. And the Documents stack is a great place to keep things like presentations, spreadsheets, and word processing files. The files in each stack can appear as large icons that preview their contents, so it's easy to find the right one before you click.
Stacks are scrollable, so you can easily view all items, and you can navigate through folders in a stack to see all the files inside the stack. Create as many stacks as you wish simply by dragging folders to the right side of your Dock.
All-new: Exposé in the Dock.
With Exposé now integrated into the Dock, you can view the open windows of a particular application with a click. Just click and hold any application icon in the Dock, and Exposé tiles the open windows of that application while causing the windows of other applications to fade away. The clutter cleared, you can easily find the document you need. A click makes it the active window, and pressing the Space bar gives you a full-screen preview of the window. That's not all you can do with Exposé in the Dock. When you drag a file onto a Dock icon, all the application's open windows pop up, so you can place the file in the right window--perfect if you want to attach a document to an email message.
Introducing the Finder.
The Finder is like home base for your Mac. Represented by the blue icon with the smiling face, it's one of the first things you see when you start working on your Mac. It lets you organize and access practically everything on your Mac, including applications, files, folders, discs, and shared drives on your network. You can also see rich, high-quality previews of the contents of your files. The Finder takes full advantage of the advanced technologies in Mac OS X--such as 64-bit support and Grand Central Dispatch--so it responds more quickly to your actions.
Meet the sidebar.
The sidebar in the Finder window is your starting point when browsing your Mac. If you've used iTunes, you'll feel right at home. Like iTunes, the sidebar is organized into categories to make it easy to locate your stuff--frequently accessed folders, CDs and DVDs, computers on your local network, and so on. With a few clicks, you're on your way to finding what you need. The sidebar also features a handy Search For section. It uses Spotlight search to let you quickly find files you've modified today, yesterday, or in the past week, or find all images, movies, or documents. Just click one of the folders and you'll see an up-to-the-minute list of files. And just like the Dock, you can customize the sidebar with your own search folders.
Instant networking.
Any Mac or PC on your home network automatically appears in the sidebar, allowing you to easily share files between them and even use Spotlight search and Cover Flow to search the other computers. And when you click a connected Mac, you can use screen sharing, which lets you see and control another Mac as if you were sitting in front of it--useful, for example, when you want to show someone how to use an application or feature.
See your files in Cover Flow.
Mac OS X helps you navigate everything on your Mac visually with an innovation called Cover Flow. Using Cover Flow, you can flip through your documents as easily as you flip through music in iTunes or bookmarks in Safari 4. Each file is displayed as a large preview of its first page, so you can actually see the contents of a document before opening it.
Three more ways to view.
You can also see your files in list view, which lets you easily sort them in different ways, including by file name, date modified, or file type. You can see them in column view, which lets you navigate through multiple folders quickly. And you can see them as large icons, up to 512 by 512 pixels in size. Icon view lets you thumb through a multipage document or watch a QuickTime movie right in the Finder, an easy way to find and view your stuff.
Exposé unshuffles overlapping windows on your desktop into an organized thumbnail view, so you can quickly locate and switch to any window or get to any file on the desktop. Click to enlarge. |
Exposé
Instantly view all open windows in stunning style with a single keystroke. Exposé unshuffles overlapping windows on your desktop into an organized thumbnail view, so you can quickly locate and switch to any window or get to any file on the desktop.
From chaos to order.
If you like to work with many applications and documents at the same time, you probably spend time each day poking through your open windows just to uncover the one you need at the moment. Wouldn't it be great if all you had to do was press one key to snap all of that window chaos into order?
That's exactly what Exposé does. With one keystroke, Exposé instantly tiles all your open windows, scales them down, and neatly arranges them, so you can see what's in every single one. And you definitely can see every one, because Exposé preserves the visual quality of the window in its reduced size. To see a full-screen preview, just press the Space bar.
That's not all. Move from one tiled window to the next and you'll see its title displayed at the bottom of the window. When you find the window you need, just click it. Magically, every window returns to full size, and the window you clicked--whether it's a folder, a PDF, a QuickTime movie, or a Word document--becomes the active window.
Return to your desktop.
There's one more feature in Exposé. Press one key to push all the windows aside, giving you instant access to your desktop. Once you grab what you need, another keypress brings all the windows back. Want to open a document? Check to see if the CD or DVD you're burning in the background is ready? Or quickly locate and drag a file into an email as an enclosure? Exposé makes it easy.
All-new: Exposé in the Dock.
Exposé not only tiles all your open windows, it also lets you view the open windows of a particular application. For example, say you're a Keynote maestro and often have up to a dozen documents open at the same time. Exposé makes finding the one you need incredibly easy. Just click and hold the Keynote icon in the Dock, and Exposé tiles your Keynote windows while causing the windows of other applications to fade away. The clutter cleared, you can easily find the document you need. A click makes it the active window, and pressing the Space bar gives you a full-screen preview of the window. Prefer keyboard shortcuts? You can tile application windows with a keystroke, too.
And that's not all you can do with Exposé in the Dock. When you drag a file onto a Dock icon, all the application's open windows pop up, so you can place the file in the right window--perfect if you want to attach a document to an email message.
Instantly preview the contents of your documents without ever opening them. |
Quick Look
Instantly preview the contents of your documents without ever opening them. Flip through multipage PDFs, watch full-screen video, view photo slideshows, and more. With a single click.
Opening files is so last year.
Quick Look is the innovative technology that gives you a sneak peek of entire files--even multiple-page documents and video--without opening them. All you have to do is select a file in the Finder and press the Space bar. An elegant transparent window appears, showing you the contents of the file instantly. It's great when you're looking for something specific but don't have time to open lots of files to find it.
See everything.
Quick Look works with nearly every file on your system, including images, text files, PDF documents, movies, Keynote presentations, Mail attachments, and Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files. To see a file in Quick Look, you simply tap the Space bar or click the Quick Look icon in the Finder window. You can view the file in full screen, and you can open the application that created it with a double-click. Best of all, Quick Look works even if you don't have the application that created it--perfect when a colleague sends you a document that you couldn't otherwise open.
A Quick Look back in time.
You can use Quick Look to your advantage when you're searching for files to restore in Time Machine. Once you locate the file you're looking for, use Quick Look to verify its contents before restoring it to the desktop.
View attachments, no detachment.
Quick Look also works in the Mail and iChat applications in Mac OS X. Say you receive a message with a bunch of attachments. Instead of downloading and opening each one, you can use Quick Look to see them with a click. It's great for viewing PDFs, Microsoft Office documents, and other files. You can even view attached photos as a slideshow and add them to your iPhoto library with ease.
With Spotlight, you can find anything on your computer as quickly as you type: files, email, contacts, images, calendar events, and applications. Click to enlarge. |
In addition to the Finder, Spotlight search technology is built into other applications in Mac OS X: Mail, Address Book, iCal, System Preferences, Preview, even Safari. |
Spotlight
With Spotlight, you can find anything on your computer as quickly as you type: files, email, contacts, images, calendar events, and applications. And because it's built into the core of Mac OS X, search results update instantly whenever files change.
Stop looking, start finding.
Spotlight is the lightning-fast search technology built into Mac OS X that makes it easy to find what you're looking for, even if you don't know where to look. Conveniently available in the Mac OS X menu bar, the Spotlight search field gives you instant results as you start typing, encompassing not only files, folders, and documents but also messages in Mail, contacts in Address Book, iCal calendars, items in System Preferences, applications, and even dictionary definitions. Spotlight searches aren't confined to your computer--you can also search other computers on the network.
The need for speed.
Built into the core of Mac OS X, Spotlight delivers results so quickly because it indexes files on your computer in the background, so you never experience lag times or slowdowns. And when you make a change, such as adding a new file, email, or contact, Spotlight updates its index automatically, so search results are always up-to-the-moment accurate.
Searching with smarts.
When you search with Spotlight, you're actually accessing a comprehensive, constantly updated index that sees all the metadata inside supported files--the "what, when, and who" of every piece of information saved on your Mac--including the kind of content, the author, edit history, format, size, and many more details. Most document types, including Microsoft Word documents, Adobe Photoshop images, and email, already contain rich metadata. And because Spotlight indexes content as well, your search results include what appears inside a file or document, not just its title. When you click the document, you are immediately taken to that spot in the document with the search terms highlighted.
Smartly organized.
Thanks to the speed and flexibility of Spotlight, you'll discover countless new ways to organize your files. You can save the results of a search as a Smart Folder that automatically updates as you add, change, or remove documents on your Mac. Smart Folders contain files grouped together based on search criteria instead of physical location, so the same file can appear in multiple Smart Folders without moving from its original saved location on your system. No need to duplicate, shift, or update files: Spotlight Smart Folders keep everything organized for you.
It's in the Mail. (And more.)
In addition to the Finder, Spotlight search technology is built into other applications in Mac OS X: Mail, Address Book, iCal, System Preferences, Preview, even Safari. No matter which application you search, results appear immediately after you start typing a few letters. And your search is customizable. In Mail, for example, you can search in selected mailboxes or across all of them, and in individual fields (To, From, Subject) or entire messages. In Address Book, you can search the entire list or individual groups.
With its simple, elegant interface and support for the latest Internet standards, Safari gets out of your way and lets you enjoy the web. |
Safari 4
Experience the web with the fast, easy-to-use web browser. With its simple, elegant interface and support for the latest Internet standards, Safari gets out of your way and lets you enjoy the web.
Surf fast.
Safari 4 in Snow Leopard outraces all other browsers. On even the most demanding Web 2.0 applications, Safari delivers blazingly fast performance using the new Nitro Engine. For example, thanks to 64-bit technology in Snow Leopard, JavaScript performance in Safari 4 is up to 50 percent faster than the 32-bit version of Safari. In addition, Safari offers top-flight HTML performance--the best on any platform--loading pages up to 3 times faster than Internet Explorer 8 and almost 3 times faster than Firefox 3.5. What does all that mean for you? Less time loading pages and more time enjoying them.
Distraction-free browsing.
Safari sports a clean, elegant look that keeps your focus where it belongs: on the content of the web page. The features you use most are just a click away, and an integrated Google search bar makes it easy to find what you're looking for.
Crash resistant.
Safari 4 in Snow Leopard is even more resistant to crashes. It turns out that the number one cause of crashes in Mac OS X is browser plug-ins. So Apple engineers redesigned Safari to make plug-ins run separately from the browser. If a plug-in crashes on a web page, Safari keeps running. Just refresh the page and get going again.
Flip through history.
Safari 4 offers a dramatic way to revisit your browsing history. Just type a word or phrase in the History Search field in Top Sites, and Safari quickly presents you with full-page previews of the websites that look exactly as they did when you last visited them. You flip through them just like in Cover Flow in iTunes or the Finder, then click to access the page you want.
See your Top Sites.
The new Top Sites feature lets you enjoy a stunning, at-a-glance preview of your favorite websites without lifting a finger. Safari 4 tracks the sites you browse and ranks your favorites, presenting up to 24 thumbnails on a single page and making them accessible with just a click. You can customize the display by pinning a favorite site to a specific location in the grid. And a star in the upper right of each thumbnail indicates whether a site has new content since the last time you visited.
Surf securely.
With support for the latest standards for secure access and information sharing on the web, Safari protects you whether you're browsing the Internet at home or on a public computer. Safari offers built-in antiphishing technology that detects fraudulent websites and warns you before displaying the information. It also supports EV (Extended Validation) Certificates, so you can feel confident shopping, updating account information, or paying bills online.
Kid-proof the Internet.
Start your kids' web exploration off on the right foot with Safari parental controls. Using the same technology that keeps your inbox free of junk mail, a content filter in Mac OS X takes a quick peek at websites before they load and tries to determine if they're suitable for kids. If they're not, Mac OS X blocks them from view. You can override this filter by creating lists of specific websites you want--or don't want--your children to see.
Mail offers an elegant user interface that makes it easy to manage all your email from a single, ad-free inbox, even when you're not connected to the Internet. Click to enlarge. |
Mail, iCal, Address Book
Three built-in applications that work as one: Mail, iCal, and Address Book bring the power of Mac OS X to your email, calendar, and contacts. You get elegant, easy-to-use interfaces, lightning-fast searches, and complete integration across the applications and your Mac.
Mail: All your email accounts in one place.
Designed from the ground up specifically for email, Mail offers an elegant user interface that makes it easy to manage all your email from a single, ad-free inbox, even when you're not connected to the Internet. It works with most email standards--including POP3 and IMAP--and most popular email services, such as Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, and AOL Mail. If you have more than one email account, no problem. Just add all your accounts to Mail and you'll be able to access everything from one central place.
Microsoft Exchange Server Support
With Snow Leopard, Mac OS X is the only operating system with built-in support for the latest version of Microsoft Exchange Server. So you can use your Mac--with all the features and applications you love--at home and at work and have all your messages, meetings, and contacts in one place.
Data, detected.
Mail does more than just show email. It also analyzes the contents to help you act on them. Say you get an email inviting you to dinner at Gino's Pizza tomorrow at 6 p.m. Mail not only recognizes that 6 p.m. is the time, it knows that "tomorrow" represents a date on a calendar. So you can add the invitation to your iCal calendar by clicking the date, whether it's an actual date (October 18) or a relative date (tomorrow). It also knows that Gino's is a place, so you can click the address to view a Google map of the restaurant's location. And if the message includes a phone number or email address, you can add it to Address Book with just a click.
Filtering the junk.
Mail includes an intelligent mail filter that automatically catches messages it thinks are junk. Junk mail is placed in a special folder in Mail so it doesn't clog up your inbox. If a junk message gets through, simply click the Junk button, and from then on, similar email will be placed in the Junk folder. The more you train Mail to recognize junk mail, the better it gets.
Address Book: One place for all your contacts.
Address Book gives you a flexible and convenient place to store contact information for your family, friends, and colleagues. You can import information from other applications, create distribution lists for clubs and groups, print address labels and envelopes, and more. Because Address Book is built on the industry-standard vCard format for storing contact information, your friends can send you cards that you can add to your own list by dropping them in--no typing required.
|
|
Do more with your addresses.
Address Book does more than display card contents; it also lets you use them. Click an address to ask the web for a Google map showing the location. Click a URL to open the website. Click an email address to instantly send a message or start an iChat conversation.
iCal: A powerful desktop calendar.
iCal makes it easy to keep track of your busy schedule. You can create as many separate calendars as you need--one for home, another for school, a third for work, and so on. You can see all your calendars in a single window or choose to see only the calendars you want.
RSVP you.
With iCal, you can invite friends and family to events. iCal lets you create invitations using contact information from your Address Book, update your guest list, keep track of attendee responses, and receive the latest status information. A centralized notification box keeps all your invitations and responses in one easy-to-access location so you can manage events in iCal instead of your busy email inbox. And when you or another Mac user receives an iCal invitation in Mail, it's automatically added to iCal.
Find what you need.
Thanks to Spotlight, it's easy to find information in Mail, iCal, and Address Book. Within the applications, a search sorts through everything--all fields in an email, all information on a card or appointment--so you find every possible match. If you're not using the applications, you can still find messages, contacts, and appointments by using Spotlight search in the menu bar. Start typing a search term and Spotlight returns the related items immediately.
Smart Groups and Smart Mailboxes.
Spotlight technology helps you organize your mail and contacts in another big way: Smart Groups and Smart Mailboxes. You simply select the relevant criteria--say, every contact with a birthday in the next 30 days or every email sent by your boss--and your applications create a folder containing every item that meets your criteria. Best of all, the folders stay updated as new items are created. Smart Groups in Address Book appear in your Group list, and Smart Mailboxes in Mail appear just below your inboxes.
Fully integrated.
Because they're Mac OS X applications, Mail, iCal, and Address Book are fully integrated with each other and with other features of your Mac. For example, Mail and iCal use the contacts in your Address Book, so you can quickly send messages or invitations to individuals and groups. Mail can access your iPhoto library, so it's easy to email pictures to your friends and family. If you receive an attachment, Mail lets you use Quick Look to view its contents without saving the attachment and opening another application.
Syncing included.
Part of what makes Address Book and iCal so powerful is seamless syncing. They can sync the contact and calendar information on your Mac with your iPhone or other mobile phone, PDA, or iPod touch, so it follows you everywhere. And with a MobileMe account, your contacts and calendars stay up to date across multiple Mac computers and on the web, so you can access your information from any computer with an Internet connection.
iChat is a rich instant messaging application that works on the AIM network and makes it easy to stay in touch with friends and family using text and video, whether they're on a Mac or a PC. Click to enlarge. |
iChat
Included with Mac OS X, iChat is a rich instant messaging application that works with your AIM or MobileMe account and makes it easy to stay in touch with friends and family using text and video, whether they're on a Mac or a PC.
IM me.
A powerful instant text messaging application, iChat comes with Mac OS X and is loaded with great features that make sending messages to your AIM or MobileMe buddies fast and easy. Simple text chats feel like natural conversations, with icons and thought bubbles that make it easy to see who's saying what. And you can transmit any kind of file--from a web address to a photo--by simply dragging it into your chat. Pictures display right in the message window, web links open in a browser with a click. In short, iChat is the best way to IM.
Don't just type it--say it face to face.
Most Mac computers include a built-in iSight camera and mic. When you use them with iChat, you get the easiest way to have high-quality video and audio chats with your friends and family. You can chat with just one other person or make it a party by starting a multiway chat. Featuring a three-dimensional view, iChat practically puts everybody in the room with you. View their faces reflected into space, just as if they were sitting around a conference room table. And with video backdrops built into iChat, you can make it look like you're chatting from the Eiffel Tower, under the sea, or your own custom backdrop.
Click to begin.
With its intuitive interface, iChat shows you when your buddies are available for a chat. Bright icons indicate their online status and whether they're capable of a video chat or just audio. To start a chat, click the camera or phone icon to send an invitation. To add more people, click the icons for the meeting attendees on your buddy list and each colleague steps into your virtual office.
Show off slideshows from anywhere.
Why wait for a darkened room and a projector to present vacation photos or Keynote slides? Now you can do it all remotely, right in iChat. Put on a photo slideshow, click through a Keynote presentation, or play a movie--in full screen, accompanied by a video feed of you hosting--while your buddy looks on.
Share and share alike.
Thanks to iChat screen sharing, you and your buddy can observe and control a single desktop, so you can easily collaborate with a colleague, browse the web with a friend, or pick plane seats with your spouse. Share your own desktop or your buddy's--you both have control at all times. iChat initiates an audio chat when you start a screen sharing session, so you can talk things through while you're at it.
Child's play.
With iChat at home, you can enforce your "no talking to strangers" rule using parental controls that allow you to decide who your children can chat with online. Approve the buddies you trust and iChat blocks all attempts to send and receive IMs with anyone else. iChat also automatically hides or displays online status so that only buddies approved by you can see if your kids are online.

A beautiful new player.
Completely redesigned in Mac OS X Snow Leopard, QuickTime X debuts a brand-new version of QuickTime Player, the application used by millions to watch a wide range of video formats and files. Using the power of the Core Animation technology in Mac OS X, QuickTime Player offers a clean, uncluttered interface with controls that fade out when they're not needed. And large thumbnail images make navigating chaptered movies simpler than before. Instead of text-only chapter names, QuickTime Player displays frame-based thumbnail images for each chapter marker, so it's easy to navigate your chaptered media.
Trim your media.
The new QuickTime Player lets you trim your media to the ideal length by removing unwanted portions from the beginning or end. Rather than relying on a simple timeline, it displays frame-based thumbnails that help you make the perfect edit.
Share with iTunes and the web.
QuickTime Player converts your personal media files for use by iTunes and your iPhone, iPod, or Apple TV, using the optimal settings for each destination. After conversion, QuickTime Player automatically delivers the content to your iTunes library. Built for high quality and smooth playback.
QuickTime X is optimized for the latest media formats--such as H.264 and AAC--through a new media architecture that delivers stutter-free playback of high-definition content on nearly all Snow Leopard-based Mac systems. QuickTime X maximizes the efficiency of modern media playback by using the graphics processor to scale and display video. It further increases efficiency by supporting GPU-accelerated video decoding of H.264 files. And QuickTime X takes advantage of the proven capabilities of ColorSync to color-manage your media for the best playback experience and for sharing to your iPhone, iPod, or Apple TV.

Your personal photographer.
Photo Booth is a fun application that makes it easy to take photos using the built-in iSight camera in your Mac. Just look into the lens, smile, and click. Before it snaps your photo, Photo Booth flashes your display with bright white to add more light to your face. Take a single snapshot or use the burst mode to take four quick pictures.
The fun begins.
Sure, you can take regular photos, but the real fun starts when you use the cool effects and backdrops in Photo Booth. Snap a photo of yourself at the Eiffel Tower or in outer space. Twist and twirl your smile with the strange Twirl effect. Add an artistic look with the Colored Pencil effect. Experiment with all the effects to transform your look.
Capture video clips.
Photo Booth is not just for pictures. Using your iSight camera, you can shoot video clips and send them to friends and family via email with just a few clicks. Backdrops and effects work for your videos, too.
Snow Leopard makes Time Machine up to 50 percent faster and reduces the time it takes to complete your initial backup to Time Capsule. |
Time Machine
Never again worry about losing your digital files. Time Machine automatically saves up-to-date copies of everything on your Mac--photos, music, videos, documents, applications, and settings. If you ever have the need, you can easily go back in time to recover anything.
Set it, then forget it.
Time Machine works with your Mac and an external hard drive. Just connect the drive and assign it to Time Machine and you're a step closer to enjoying peace of mind. Time Machine will automatically back up your entire Mac, including system files, applications, accounts, preferences, music, photos, movies, and documents. But what makes Time Machine different from other backup applications is that it not only keeps a spare copy of every file, it remembers how your system looked on a given day--so you can revisit your Mac as it appeared in the past.
Every change, every hour.
Following the initial backup of your entire Mac, Time Machine automatically makes incremental backups every hour, every day, copying just the files that have changed since your last backup. And it does this all in the background so you can continue working while Time Machine is busy copying your files. Time Machine saves the hourly backups for the past 24 hours, daily backups for the past month, and weekly backups for everything older than a month.
Go back in time.
Say you accidentally deleted a file you meant to save. Simply enter the Time Machine browser and you'll see exactly how your computer looked on the dates you're browsing. You can browse for files using Cover Flow or perform a Spotlight search to find what you need. Use the timeline to select a specific date, or let Time Machine fly through time to find your most recent changes. Before recovering a file, use Quick Look to verify the contents of the file, then click Restore to bring it back to the present.
Ready when you are.
When your mobile Mac is connected to your backup drive, Time Machine works as you'd expect. When it isn't connected, Time Machine also works as you'd expect. It keeps track of which files have changed since the last backup and backs them up to your backup drive the next time you connect. On any Mac, if Time Machine is unable to perform a backup, that's duly noted in its preference pane.
Migration with style.
If you're setting up a new Mac with files from an old Mac, Time Machine can help simplify the process. Just use Migration Assistant to copy portions of any Time Machine backup to a new Mac, or select "Restore System from Time Machine" in the Leopard DVD Utilities menu. Choose any date recorded in Time Machine to set up your new Mac exactly as your previous Mac was on that date.
A native version of Microsoft Office is available for Mac OS X, and it features a Mac-friendly interface that lets you create documents with Word, presentations with PowerPoint, and spreadsheets with Excel just like on a Windows PC. |
Almost any device that connects to a computer via USB, audio cable, or Bluetooth will work with a Mac. |
Built for compatibility.
Mom always said, "Play nice with others." Your computer should, too. With Mac OS X, you can use Microsoft Office, connect to industry-standard printers and cameras, and even run Windows.
Office on your Mac.
A native version of Microsoft Office is available for Mac OS X, and it features a Mac-friendly interface that lets you create documents with Word, presentations with PowerPoint, and spreadsheets with Excel just like on a Windows PC. And it's compatible with Microsoft Office for Windows, so you can easily share documents with friends and colleagues. Even if you don't have Office installed on your Mac, you can use Quick Look to take a peek at Office documents without having to open an application.
Microsoft Exchange Server support.
With Snow Leopard, the Mac is the only computer with built-in support for the latest version of Microsoft Exchange Server. So you can use your Mac--with all the features and applications you love--at home and at work and have all your messages, meetings, and contacts in one place.
Industry-standard bearer.
Thanks to its support for industry standards, Mac OS X works with virtually all email providers and websites. It also lets you view the most common file types, including Office documents, PDFs, images, text files, MP3s, videos, ZIP files, and more.
So if you're moving files from a PC or if your friends and colleagues send you files, you can rest assured they'll work on your Mac. And if you buy your Mac at an Apple Retail Store, an Apple Genius can transfer your files from your PC for you and even recycle your old PC.
Relax. Your camera, printer, and mouse work, too.
Almost any device that connects to a computer via USB, audio cable, or Bluetooth will work with a Mac. That includes digital cameras, external hard drives, printers, keyboards, speakers, and more.
You can even use a right-click mouse with a Mac. And with thousands of device drivers included with Mac OS X, you can start using these devices as soon as you plug them in--no need to download additional software.
It runs Windows, too.
Have a Windows application you need to use once in a while? No problem. Every new Mac lets you install Windows XP and Vista and run them at native speeds, using a built-in utility called Boot Camp.
Setup is simple and safe for your Mac files. After you've completed the installation, you can boot up your Mac using either Mac OS X or Windows. (That's why it's called Boot Camp.) Or if you want to run Windows and Mac applications at the same time--without rebooting--you can install Windows using VMware or Parallels software.
Connect to PCs over a network.
The Finder not only lets you browse files on your Mac, it also makes it easy to find files on other computers--both Mac and PC--on your home network. Computers that allow file sharing automatically show up in the Shared section of the Finder sidebar, allowing you to browse files and folders you have permission to view.
With virtually no effort on your part, Mac OS X protects itself--and you--from viruses, malicious applications, and other threats. |
Mac OS X has you covered.
Mac OS X doesn't get PC viruses. And its built-in defenses help keep you safe from other malware without the hassle of constant alerts and sweeps.
Defense against viruses and malware.
With virtually no effort on your part, Mac OS X offers a multilayered system of defenses against viruses and other malicious applications, or malware. For example, it prevents hackers from harming your programs through a technique called "sandboxing"--restricting what actions programs can perform on your Mac, what files they can access, and what other programs they can launch. Other automatic security features include Library Randomization, which prevents malicious commands from finding their targets, and Execute Disable, which protects the memory in your Mac from attacks.
The 64-bit applications in Snow Leopard are even more secure from hackers and malware than the 32-bit versions. That's because 64-bit applications can use more advanced security techniques to fend off malicious code.
Always on the alert.
Innocent-looking files downloaded over the Internet may contain dangerous malware in disguise. That's why files you download using Safari, Mail, and iChat are screened to determine if they contain applications. If they do, Mac OS X alerts you, then warns you the first time you open one. You decide whether to open the application or cancel the attempt. And Mac OS X can use digital signatures to verify that an application hasn't been changed since it was created.
Stay up to date. Automatically.
When a potential security threat arises, Apple responds quickly by providing software updates and security enhancements that can be downloaded automatically and installed with a click. Apple works with the incident response community, including the Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams (FIRST) and the FreeBSD Security Team, to proactively identify and quickly correct operating system vulnerabilities. In addition, Apple cooperates closely with organizations such as the Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Center (CERT/CC).
Features such as Password Assistant help you lock out identity thieves who are after personal data. |
Antiphishing technology in Safari protects you from scams by detecting fraudulent websites. |
Easy to customize.
With Mac OS X, it's easy to customize and use security features. Setting up secure file sharing, for example, involves a quick trip to System Preferences. FileVault lets you encrypt all the files in your Home folder with just a few clicks and a password of your choosing. The firewall comes preconfigured to block online intruders, but it's easy to make whatever changes you want.
Exercise parental control.
As a parent, you want your kids to have a safe and happy experience on the computer. Mac OS X keeps Parental Control an eye out even when you can't. With a simple setup in Parental Controls preferences, you can manage, monitor, and control the time your kids spend on the Mac, the sites they visit, and the people they chat with.
Don't go phishing.
Phishing is a form of fraud in which online thieves try to acquire sensitive information such as user names, passwords, and credit card details by creating fake websites that look like legitimate companies. The antiphishing technology in Safari protects you from such scams by detecting these fraudulent websites. If you visit a suspicious site, Safari disables the page and displays an alert warning you about its suspect nature.
Surf safely.
Mac OS X makes it easy to stay safe online, whether you're checking your bank account, sending confidential email, or sharing files with friends and coworkers. Features such as Password Assistant help you lock out identity thieves who are after personal data, while built-in encryption technologies protect your private information and communications.
Security without the hassle.
Mac OS X won't slow you down with constant Password Assistant security alerts and sweeps. Every Mac ships with a secure configuration so you don't have to worry about understanding complex settings. Just turn your Mac on and start working. When you need to be aware of something, it will let you know. And if you want to change the security configuration, just open System Preferences and make any adjustments.
More Power to Your Mac.
Since 2001, the breakthrough technologies and rock-solid UNIX foundation of Mac OS X have made it not only the world's most advanced operating system but also extremely secure, compatible, and easy to use. Snow Leopard continues this innovation by incorporating new technologies that offer immediate improvements while also smartly setting it up for the future.

If your computer is using Windows 7, don't buy Photoshop Elements 8. The system requirements says that it is compatible with Windows 7 but that is a lie. It will not operate properly. On my computer, the editor will not load which pretty much defeats the whole purpose for buying the program. It does run on my computer with Vista, but the computer with Windows 7 has all my photos. Either Adobe knowlingly released PSE8 with this defect just so they could get it to market or they have a pathetic quality control function. Adobe refuses to address the compatibility issues with PSE8 and Windows 7. Oh yeah, they put out some assinine set of possible troubleshooting procedures that are absolutely useless to the average user. They have no credibility with me. DON'T BUY IT!!!! until they offer a suitable update.

I have thought about buying this a couple times, but never did. The Amazon deal of the day and the rebate made it such a low cost I had to finally get it. Haven't used it much, but I have a great need for video and photo editing since I have a Nikon SLR and a Sony HD camcorder. Lack of use is not the software, but the time I don't have to apply to creating DVDs and albums of all the photos and video.

The Organizer software does what is advertised but I have to wait thrity minutes for the "agent program" to finish updating the catalog everytime I open the catalog. The agent program runs in the background and uses 10 to 40 percent of the CPU resources even when the Organizer program is not being run. This slows the computer down to a crawl for everything. The editor program is nice but alone is not worth the price of the program. Sell it for half price as a image editor that comes with a near worthless photo organizer if you have more than a 1000 photos.

This is my first serious photo edition software. I used to play with picasa before. After using this for few months now, I like it. I have been using the editor a lot to make tonal changes to the photos and make it look much better. Its a great editor to start with. I wouldn't say its easy to use at first, but you can learn to use it properly pretty quickly with some help from books. Highly recommend this software especially for beginners.

~ August 28, 2010 ~ iWork '09 vs. Microsoft Office
iWork '09 is a great tool for use in school, at the office, or just for home use. It's good alternative to Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Home & Student Edition. I prefer iWork over Office because iWork is compatible with Office, but it has that easy-yet-amazing Apple touch. One flaw I noticed was in Pages (Pages is like Word) there aren't as many options such as borders to make the document look nicer such as in Word. I bet that features such as borders will be added in the next version of iWork. Here is an overview of each product in iWork vs. Office:
Pages vs. Word:
Pages is an easy to use word processing application where you can customize your documents and add your own personal flair. Pages comes with many more templates (such as newsletters, resumes, screenplays, envelopes) than Word, and it doesn't have those cheesy clip arts that make your document look "good". Apple takes a different approach here and makes everything look more professional, fun, and productive. You can also export Pages projects as Word files, so there aren't any compatibility issues; for Mac or PC. Other than those bonuses, Pages is just Apple's version of Microsoft Word. Depending on what you need, you could like either Word or Pages better, I personally prefer pages because of all the templates.
Numbers vs. Excel:
Numbers is very similar to Excel. While numbers has more themes and graphics to make your document look better, it is not as different as Keynote and PowerPoint. Excel has lots of color schemes and graphs, but numbers has all that plus personalized layouts, such as graphs, photos, and maps laid out on the document. While the two are the most similar out of all the the iWork and Office programs, I still choose Numbers over Excel because of the appeal of the final project.
Keynote vs. PowerPoint:
Keynote and PowerPoint are the most different here. Keynote Is much, much better than PowerPoint in my opinion. I think that PowerPoint is Office's biggest flaw. With PowerPoint, you build new pages that really don't have a set theme (that I know of), but with Keynote you get 44 different themes to choose from, then a template for each page that you want to create (such as a page for photos, a page for pros and cons, or just a blank page). And each page keeps a cool theme that make the overall document say,"Wow!". PowerPoint doesn't have nearly as many of the features that Keynote does.
Overall, iWork is better than Office in my opinion. Office isn't a bad choice, in the end it really boils down to personal preference. One thing to note is that iWork is Mac only, so that can leave you with Office as your only option. Get a free trail of both software suites then base your choice off of that. I hope I helped! :)

For under $50 I think I just made the purchase of my life. I can't spell out all the plans, but I'm only using ONE of the three software products included - Keynote. I won't use it in the traditional sense of slideshow presentation, but I've got this idea that I can easily make a six figure income on. So, check with me in a year and I'll tell you how it all worked out!

80% of people using computers use Microsoft Office. But that doesn't mean you should not use iWork.
There's a difference in writing documents with MS Office and doing it with iWork. The latter will help you in not just writing but designing great layouts for your papers, essays, resumes and many others; instead of just the plain old MS Office way of doing things which looks dated and not really creative.
I just finished a master's degree in journalism, and I wrote all of my papers in iWork, with the help of design tools which made them stand out and spark my creativity. Now, this will mean that, even if iWork is able to read MS Office files, some times when you fiddle a lot with pictures and fonts, people won't have the same view when they open the files on MS Office.
That's why if you can get away with it, you might like to save your work in PDF format, something iWork allows (MS Office doesn't).
I recommend iWork for students, teachers and anyone who wants to make their presentations, documents and spreadsheets look professional.

Streamlined word processing
Every word counts.
Creating great-looking documents is simple with Pages. At the top of the page, the contextual Format Bar lets you do the basics--formatting text and adjusting images--with just one click. View and choose fonts with the "what you see is what you get" (WYSIWYG) font menu. Change text size and color. Adjust line spacing and paragraph alignment. Apply character and paragraph styles. When you select a photo, shape, or table on the page, the Format Bar displays tools to adjust the images. And while you write, Pages can automatically format lists with bullets or numbers, check your spelling, proofread your document, and generate a table of contents.
Fine-tuning your document is easy, too. You can add headers, footers, footnotes, and bookmarks with a few clicks. Insert section, layout, and page breaks from a pull-down menu. And the word count is visible at the bottom of the page--just click the total to see details including the number of characters, lines, paragraphs, and more. When it comes to word processing, streamlined and smart come standard in Pages.
Advanced writing tools
There's more to the story.
Any word processor can help you type. Pages gives you all the tools you need to write and perfect your writing. Now you can view your document full screen. With one click, clutter disappears so you focus on what you're writing and make changes without distractions. Organize your ideas in Outline mode. Create an outline with multiple levels, expand or collapse topics, and drag and drop to promote or demote items. Mail merge takes your data from Numbers or your contacts from Address Book to create personalized letters, invoices, and faxes. And in Pages, you can insert sophisticated equations into your lab reports with MathType 6 and add professional bibliographies to your research papers using EndNote X2.
When it's time for comments and feedback, change tracking makes collaboration with anyone easier, clearer, and more concise. And it's always easy to find your place. Next to your document, you see thumbnails of all your pages and sections, including changes that have been made. Quickly copy or delete a section. Or drag and drop to move sections around. Scroll through thumbnails to preview your document or enlarge them for a better view.

With the Template Chooser, you can preview over 30 templates to use for home, work, and school. Tables are already made. Formulas have been figured out. Fonts are in place. They're all ready to go. Transform your data into compelling 2D or 3D bar, line, area, or pie charts. Click to enlarge. |
Open and save as Microsoft Excel files. Email your spreadsheets right from Numbers. And share with everyone on the web. |
In Numbers '09, spreadsheets are built on a flexible, free-form canvas. So you can move tables, charts, graphics, and text anywhere you want on the page. As tables resize, objects automatically adjust to fit around them. Create as many tables as you want. Change fonts, sizes, colors, styles, and borders. With graphics tools, alignment guides, and rulers, spreadsheet-making becomes a surprisingly creative endeavor. And suddenly, spreadsheets make more sense.
The Media Browser adds some excitement to your spreadsheet. With a click, you can access your photos from iPhoto, your movies, and your video. The Sheet Navigator lists every table, chart, and sheet in your spreadsheet so you can quickly jump to any part of your project and make changes.
Formulas for everyone
It all adds up beautifully.
Creating formulas may seem complex, but Numbers makes it uncomplicated. Using the intuitive browser, you can choose from over 250 functions (including more than 90 new ones). Tooltips and built-in help provide clear and concise explanations of each variable. You can even use visual placeholders for variables when you create formulas. The new Formula List view shows you every calculation on your spreadsheet at once. And with a few clicks on the Toolbar, you can create tables and charts and add images and graphics. Easily find fonts and format text styles in the Format Bar.
Intelligent tables
Brilliance in every cell.
Numbers is a blank canvas for tables. You can create as many as you want and resize them as needed. The layout of each table is independent, so whatever you do to one table won't affect the others. Move tables anywhere--even to a different sheet--and the calculations remain intact. You can even share content between tables. WIth intuitive tools, Numbers helps you analyze data. Enter data and change values within the cells and use sliders, checkboxes, steppers, and pop-up lists to explore the results. With every change, formulas and charts instantly update and give you a new data scenario.
When there's almost too much data to decipher, Numbers lets you create categories based on information from any column. It automatically generates a summary row for each category. By using just the summary row, you can collapse, expand, and rearrange categories to organize your data any way you want. The new Reorganize button in the toolbar lets you filter by category and gives you other advanced sorting and filtering options.
Impressive charts
Off-the-charts charts.
Transform your data into compelling 2D or 3D bar, line, area, or pie charts. Combine line, column, and area series in a single mixed chart. Create two-axis charts with different value scales. Apply trendlines and error bars. The charts you create in Numbers can be linked to your Pages documents and Keynote presentations.
Compatibility and sharing
It's the universal language.
Numbers makes it easy to share your spreadsheets with colleagues or friends. You can open Microsoft Excel files in Numbers or save your Numbers spreadsheets as Excel files. With powerful graphics and formatting tools, it's easy to make Excel spreadsheets look great in Numbers. You can also export your Numbers spreadsheets as PDF files. Numbers lets you import documents in other common formats as well, including Open Financial Exchange files from Quicken, files from bank or credit card providers, comma-separated-value or tab-delimited files, vCards, and more. Printing spreadsheets in Numbers is surprisingly easy, too. Use the interactive Print view to see how big your spreadsheet will print. Then scale it up or down with a simple slider. With the new email option, send Numbers, Excel, or PDF files right from Numbers using Mac OS X Mail.
Share your work on the web.
If your colleagues need to see your work, but you don't know what format to use, upload your spreadsheet to iWork.com Public Beta1. Reviewers receive a unique iwork.com URL where they can view your spreadsheet, post comments, and download it in Numbers, Excel, or PDF format.

Even if you've never used Keynote before, you'll find creating a presentation surprisingly simple. It all starts with an enhanced Theme Chooser that lets you preview an impressive collection of 44 Apple-designed themes. Drag across a theme to skim through its slide designs. Once you've chosen the perfect canvas for your presentation, simply substitute placeholder text and graphics with your own words and images. Thanks to the Slide Navigator, the progress of your presentation and its organization are always in view.
Easy-to-use tools let you add elements such as tables, charts, media, and shapes to your slides. Add a table with a click. Just as easily add a 3D chart that you can animate. With the Media Browser, you can drag and drop photos from your iPhoto or Aperture libraries, movies from your Movies folder, and music from your iTunes library.
Powerful graphics tools
Looking good comes easy.
Make each slide in your presentation look its absolute best, using the powerful graphics tools built into Keynote. Quickly and cleanly remove the background of an image using the Instant Alpha tool. Or mask it within a predrawn shape, such as a circle or a star. With alignment and spacing guides, you can easily find the center of the slide and see if objects are spaced evenly. So anything you add to your slides--graphics, images, text boxes, or shapes--is placed precisely where you want it. If you're adding a flowchart or a diagram to your slide, then you'll appreciate the new connection lines feature. Connection lines between two objects remain anchored, no matter what changes you make. Move the objects around, and the lines move with them.
Create your presentation using one of 44 beautifully designed themes, including HD themes with 1920-by-1080 resolution. Click to enlarge. |

Animations and effects
Standing ovation highly likely.
With your choice of more than 25 transitions, including 3D transitions, you're sure to keep their eyes riveted to the screen as you move from one slide to the next. Apply the new Magic Move transition and a repeated object, such as your company's logo, automatically changes location, scale, opacity, and rotation across consecutive slides. Add stunning effects.
Flexible ways to present
Your show. Your way.
Keep the pace of your presentation flowing smoothly with the Presenter Display feature. While your presentation appears on the main display for your audience, you can see the current and next slides, your slide notes, a clock, and a timer on a second display. Add Keynote Remote to your iPhone or iPod touch and feel free to roam around the room while you present. Using Wi-Fi, Keynote Remote turns your iPhone or iPod touch into a wireless controller. In landscape view, see the current and next slides. In portrait, see the current slide with your slide notes. Tap to play and swipe to advance, wherever you are in the room. Buy Keynote Remote from iTunes now
When you can't be there, the show can still go on. Using the built-in narration tool, Keynote captures your audio voiceover and timing as you step through builds or move from one slide to the next.
Compatibility and sharing
Approved for all audiences.
Keynote gives you a variety of ways to bring your show to the people. You can use it to import presentations created in Microsoft PowerPoint and to create presentations that can easily be saved as PowerPoint files. You can also export your presentation as a QuickTime movie, or a PDF, HTML, or image file; or even directly to YouTube. Keynote does the format conversion for you. Share your work on the web.
When you need to share your presentation, but aren't sure whether your colleagues use a Mac or PC, iWork or Microsoft Office, publish it to iWork.com Public Beta.2 Reviewers receive an email with a unique URL where they can view your presentation's slides, post comments, and download a version ideal for them in Keynote, PowerPoint, or PDF format.

I read many many many good review on KIS, everywhere. In 2006 I starting dating and my choice felt on KIS (kaspersky internet security) fire wall and all.
I was really sold to them. Here is my experience.
The honeymoon. After a while, my computer seemed infected... slowind down, freezing mouse. It's impossible that all those peoples lies. So I looked online for sign of infection. Ya there was infections. I scan over nite, I scan again. Maybe it's not a virus, maybe a spywhere, they where not mentionning spywhere anywhre. Later on I learnd why. So I ended trying to get in touch with the support, seemed hard. Try to fin the tech support phone number in 30 sec for USA, you will be lucky to get it.
I ended up in the forum, thinking everything was to going on there. There was helping people, for a while. But I ended up with that moderator really grumpy. Some people where asking to see personal information from my computer get system info. I was scared, I did it. They said do it. Ok it work yé! Later on, bug again. again.
Basically since 2006 I endure having no or just little answer to my question in their forum. And a partial fix on my problems on my pc. Before I had Norton, and I discovered how having a computer could be a nightmage since I installed KIS. I reached the tech support sometime. There was one of those guy, you ask yourselve why dose he work there. I ended having my computer down for 3-5 days. I had to reinstall over and over the software, scanning on safe mode. Really a pain.
Really hard to install, cause you have to uninstall all other antispywhere and antivirus you installed before. Sometime there was a new version, they where telling people only on the forum or by support. That update button mean nothing.
I am just recovering from the new kis 2011. The vulnerability check is powerfull, but it's not based on "user friendly". The only good review you have about kis is people that are geeks, they know how to tweek it their way. But 95% of people will have problems trying to do so.
Many time with the technical support they asked me to install other third party anity-spywhere to find what kis din't find. Come on, that is ridiculous. Even on their website they say they can't beat the hackers.
About vulnerability, I check that often. The new 2011 is crazy. It tell message like: you don't need to worry about that. Also the big green light is there: "YOUR COMPUTER IS PROTECTED" from what. People get in from those vulnerabilitty that are really really hard to removed. And you will have hard time to get support with those.
This week I have 11 vulnerabilitys. 2 was about google chrome: GOOGLE c. is not up to dage. Ok I check google chrome about, everything is up to date. KIS still say no no no it is not. Ok get the support or forum, cause support can take 3 day's to aswer. By the way you have to be aware that hacker are checking KIS, cause they can go on their vulnerability website and see what is the weekness and attack those who have kis. So back to google chrome. I follow what they say: uninstall it and reinstall it. Did it, guess what, warning is still there. But no problem I have a big green light: YOUR COMPUTER IS PROTECTED and a warning don't worry about vulnerability. By the way there is a link, I click for more detais. OK I click on it... 404 website error. I learned later it's their problem. Yep, non it's mine I can't get informaitons I need to fix it. The green light is still there, and don't worry be happy. But my computer keep restarting and the mouse freeze. It's like that since 2006, there is alway's something to do, but I need to get in touch with support.
I scanend all nite, he found 2 thing. What that software is scanning in the background to protect me from that all week long.
When you see the red K pumping it's because KIS is taking control of your computer, he scan we don't know what, but he is taking everything you have in your PC. You are slave to KIS, you will learn that.
I just have enough, I just want my computer to work.
This morning I erased it, installed Bit defender. Guess what, the #1 antivirus kaspersky forget 14 treats in my computer. Bit defender scanned them before installing itselve, Kis never do that.
Now my computer is runing normally for the last 6h. I just can't believe it. And he also found vulnerabilitys, ok, I was scared. But he download and installed the udate itselve.
You will say one day Scap-persky too. Good luck.

This is the most amazing Anti-Virus/Internet Security program I have used. It was recommended to me by my computer tech. It is worth every penny spent. I have used many other brands of Anti-virus and this one stands out from the crowd.
It constantly monitors my computer. Plus monitors every web page, download and email that arrives or is visited. But it does not bog my computer down like other Anti-Virus programs do.
There are also features that help your computer stay cleaner and run faster. I have used those as well and have seen a very noticeable difference in how smoother my computer runs. The other added bonus is the fact that I can run all my instant messaging programs through the Anti-Virus program. It constantly monitors those as well. And while many of my friends got the virus that was going through the messengers the past couple months, I did not get one at all!
Buy this, and you will never regret it.

I like the look and feel of the software but it doesnt seem to do virus definition updates as often as other software security packages I have used in the past. I do believe that any AV product will slow down operation a bit, but Kaspersky is tolerable in that respect while still being very effective. I have not loaded the newest software, , because my subscription time has not expired yet, but I'm confident that it will be as good as the previous years. I use the program on my laptop and like the system of daily scheduled updates. After using Kaspersky for over a year I can say that I do not have any major complaints. It does take some time to get used to and properly set up, but it does do the job. I also back myself up with western digital exterior drive just in case Kaspersky lets a problem get through. Which could still happen

I have used Kaspersky for several years and can recommend it. The only small word of warning is that the filtering for children is weak but for that you need a different product like Net Nanny. Everything else is solid in this package.

I know a lot about Windows operating systems, as I have used and owned a few of them. I've owned a copy of Windows 3.1 (either Windows for Workgroups 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups 3.11), Windows 98 (I believe it was Windows 98 SE), Windows Me, Windows XP Home Edition, and Windows Vista Home Premium.
Now, I own an Asus K52JR-X5 which has Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit). Windows 7 has given me no problems and is a big improvement over Windows Vista (more specifically Windows Vista Home Premium), which I have on my Dell Dimension E520. When I put down my computer's screen, Windows 7 Home Premium automatically enters Hibernation mode, which is a mode similar to shutting down the computer with one main difference: When you leave Hibernation mode, everything that you had open is still there. To leave Hibernation mode, I simply lift the computer's screen, and press the power button. It's much better than simply shutting down my PC and having to re-open things.
The interface is better than any operating system I've used, and I have used Mac OS X Leopard before. I like that I'm able to put programs that I use on the Taskbar, which is like how the Dock works on Mac OS X Leopard. I also like that the date is always shown beneath the clock.
All of the programs that I want work on Windows 7 Home Premium, including Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. The latest operating system that game supports is Windows XP, yet fortunately it works on both Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit) and Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit). I find that great, because not only does that game not support Windows 7, but it is a 32-bit program, yet it works fine on 64-bit.
Overall, I love Windows 7 Home Premium. I highly recommend it if you're looking to upgrade your computer from an older version of Windows or looking for a new computer with a Windows operating system on it.
~ September 1, 2010 ~ R. Cross from Las Vegas, NV said:Better than Vista but VERY limited
Looking at Microsoft's feature matrix it would appear that Home Premium is all 90% or so of home AND office users need. But there's a lot they don't tell you.
If you are a home user with one computer and never want to network/connect/share with another computer... OK.
If you want to use Remote Desktop Protocol (I.e. share your screen with someone remotely so that they can help you on your computer), or you want to connect to an XP, Mac, Linux or any other device NOT running Vista or Windows 7 then the Home "Premium" version isn't for you.
The only thing premium about the "Home Premium" edition is the price. In my opinion, anyone but the most basic computer user should get Windows 7 Professional. The price difference isn't that great (I paid $129 for mine here on Amazon today) and it isn't crippled.
If Home Premium would really do the job for you, then you'll probably do just as well installing Ubuntu Linux and it wouldn't cost you a cent.

Windows 7 is the worst piece of 'software' I've ever encountered. Microsoft, believing it is its 'due' to impose this monstrosity on the world
to pack even more into its coffers has produced a nightmare.
They should have stuck with Windows XP. Better yet, DOS 6.22.2. Honest to God, I'd even prefer CP/M to this!
