~ September 5, 2010 ~ Brian Long from Ogden, UT USA said:Major repackaging manages to breathe life into Samus
Other M is a major deviation from the recent Wii Metroid run in virtually every stripe. For all of those who busted their behinds to get a shot of Samus without her helmet, you'll finally get your wish, as this includes cinematics and screens without even the trademark armor. Full dialogue and interactive NPC's mean that there's an actual plot line apart from collect the same set of equipment. And while side of the internal monologues are a bit cheesy, they still manage to add appeal and depth to a character that's thus far been a virtual mute.
Other M starts with a retconn immediately following Metroid Prime. Strangely lamenting the death of the baby Metroid, Samus answers a distress call from a Federation ship where she runs into several of her old squadmates, including her old CO.
Controls have radically changed. You're back to a 2-d on 3-d platformer, with movement and combat on one hand and stand alone aiming on the other. This present an annoying challenge at times, as you can no longer move while trying to fire precision shots or missiles, though this is easily balanced by useful auto-aiming during your platformer views. The camera gets poorly placed a few times, but otherwise, combat manages to flow fairly well. A few of the weapons are overblown, and fill up half the screen unnecessarily. The Scanner Visor is gone, and this is a major disappointment for me, as I thoroughly enjoyed the AI analysis of background items and enemy units. But otherwise, there's only a handful of nits with combat, but thos're easily overlooked given smart level design that can really make you think.
Voices are JRPG with some of the hookiness removed. They had to make a few bows to bizarre dialogue and pacing, but voices are good and conversations believable, though there are a few scenes that're simply weird. Graphics are a touch off, though mostly from overshadowing, but there is a good almost Resident Evil atmosphere of creepiness present, especially during certain scenes that'll make you hair stand up despite yourself.
Overall, this is classic Metroid, reinvigorated with an actual voiced cast and an introspective Samus, who's been rather devoid of personal input thus far. While I'm annoyed at the a few of the changes, overall the core gameplay is there, backed up by a well put together story that manages to be genuinely creepy at times.
~ September 5, 2010 ~ N. Byrne said:Neither a good Metroid nor a good game
Upon Other M's unveiling at E3 2009 I was torn. On one hand, I thought a cutscene, story oriented direction ala Metroid Fusion was a bad place to take the franchise that contrasted with the series' fundamentals too much. On the other hand, I'm a fan of action games, so I could forgive Other M being a poor Metroid if the game played well. Little did I know it doesn't even do that.
Sure, it plays functionally, and you can get to start to finish without too much trouble. Unfortunately, that's the most that can be said about the game. The gameplay itself lacks any satisfaction due to the ridiculous amount of handholding present. No longer do you need to time or aim your shots. Simply face your target, shoot, and the auto aim system will ensure you hit your target. The dodge mechanic is also ridiculously simplified, again removing any need for timing. Simply mash the control pad, and Samus will fluidly dodge any oncoming attacks to no compromise. Perhaps you're not interested in a fleshed out combat system in Metroid.
What about the adventure, the exploration, the atmosphere? They seem to be glossed by in lieu of telling an 'epic story'. No longer will you get lost in an alien environment. Instead, you will progress a spaceship at the command of Adam Malkovich. The problem is twofold. First, you're constantly being told where to go, and backtracking is made impossible due to doors magically closing behind you so if your idea of Metroid is exploration you can throw that out the window. Secondly, the spaceship is just a bland, unimaginative setting. There are simulated environments (forest land, fire land, ice land, is this Zelda?) to mix things up, but given they feel like nothing more than overused tropes. Perhaps most importantly, the music, frankly, is just bad. There are none of the creepy, atmospheric songs the series has become beloved for. Nothing but ambient noises that could very well be 30 second loops. To the game's credit, I did find some joy deviating from the game's rails in search of some of the power ups. Unfortunately, the satisfaction in obtainingthem was heavily diminished due to the lack of necessity thanks to the Other M's simplified gameplay.
About that 'epic story'. I won't say much, but boy, it is bad. So bad that I can see James Rolfe of AVGN fame reviewing it twenty years from now if he's still doing that gig. Overly long cutscenes, bad dialogue, one dimensional characters, and plot twists that throw off everyone's preconceived notions about a certain iconic character. It's got it all.
I can't recommend this game to any fan of the series. If you're insistent on playing it (as I was), I suggest doing more research and at the very most renting it so Nintendo won't be excused trying to pass off this joke as a "true return to classic Metroid".

I have played every Metroid game since the original. It is by far my favorite game series ever. I consider myself a gamer, but I have never cared for these `run and gun' types of games. They have destroyed all of what I loved about Metroid games. Hidden items, and the mystery of Samus Aran and the worlds she battles in are gone.
Instead of energy and missile units, they have now created this ridiculous concept of "concentration" where, when Samus's health or missiles gets critically low, she can simply "concentrate" to refill them. Three E-Recovery Tanks are available to allow you to refill more energy during concentration. There are 70 missile expansions (yes I said 70!) that increase capacity by 1 per expansion (and all locations of expansions are displayed on the map). 16 energy parts are located throughout the game, every 4 combining to create a new energy bar. Sound familiar? I'm playing Metroid, not collecting heart pieces in Zelda. There are 5 energy tanks to pick up around the game. Six accel charges allow Samus to charge her arm cannon faster (and you do have to wait for it to fully charge in this Metroid).
I knew, before the game came out, that the only way for them to accomplish the 3D 3rd person play, they would have to use an auto-aim feature. This game reminds me a lot of X-Men Origins: Wolverine in that there were cool looking moves that you could perform, but all it really takes is just running though the game pressing the attack button. These games grow old quickly. Metroid was never a game that was made to be easy. That is one of the things I always loved about it.
The story could be good however, letting Samus narrate it made the game cheesy. Like a badly narrated Square Enix game. Please don't think that I just love Metroid. I play all types of games including Square Enix games, but this Metroid shouldn't have been made. They have alienated their hardcore Metroid fans who have been buying Nintendo products throughout the years for the sole reason of playing the new Metroids. I was one of them. I hope Nintendo hears our comments and brings Metroid back.

Unfortunately Blizzard is no longer about games.
Too many years of running WOW (aka a money-printing machine) has ruined the company.
Or maybe it was all the changes to their corporate structure.
Whatever the cause, making you sign onto the internet over and over to verify your copy, no LAN game, Uber Region-Locking and charging $60 for what is effectively 1/3 of the complete game is unacceptable.
It means Blizzard has finally become a company - not about the games or the fans or even the casual customers, they are purely about squeezing every last cent out of every fan-boy they can dupe into buying their products.
Please don't take my word for it.
Research this game.
Make sure you understand completely the limitations that Blizzard tries to hide.
Buying this abomination will only encourage them to produce more.
Help them see the error in their ways.
Boycott this game.

I'v seen so many people writing bad reviews for this game, that I really don't think have even played it yet. They just go off what they read or hear.
So here we go, during the install process, you watch a narrative slideshow on what happened in SC1 and broodwar. Which I thought was pretty cool as it's been a long time since iv beat SC1. Game loads up you create your online persona, which is used in single player to save achievements too. Upon reading up about just 1 side of the campaign I wasn't overly thrilled nor did I go into this with high expectations. That being said 1 race is plenty, it took about 34 hours to beat the campaign, and there's several different missions I need to go back and play through the counterpart choice. There's different paths you can take to unlock different units, technologies, or allies.
There's great character development, it doesnt force you to it, but once your i think it was like the 3rd mission you have a command center and you can delve deeper and talk to people if you want. The single player campaign i would give 5 stars, great voice acting, awesome story, doesnt have a cliffhanger ending, yet I look forward to the next campaign.
I read somewhere about someone complaining about lack of units, and the next campaigns won't be as interesting, like i stated above the units, technologies are different, quite a bit different in single player than there online counterparts. ex; first time playing online I thought where is my flame turret!
Online could use some work, all I play are custom maps, and i like how they fill quickly if you join them, or you can host thru bnet, without worrying about portforwarding or any firewall issues. While there working on the layout and lobby to include chat and channel features, that will be nice. Now I do hate the autostart and 30 second countdown on games joined, which is why this has 4 stars and not 5. But that's easily remedied if you create your own game.

I'm extremely surprised that a company as beloved as Blizzard would throw so many restrictions at their long standing customer base. There are limits to how much abuse people will put up with before that taste that they leave in their mouth becomes to sour to accept.
I'm not going to write about all the flaws as there are plenty of reviews that shine light on them. One in particular that affects myself and up to another 400,000 people in the U.S. Army is that Blizzard in their infinite wisdom decided that they should tether this game to the internet. So now when I'm deployed I won't be able to play a game that I bought legally. Guess I'll have to look for some illegal means of playing it and next time i won't waste money trying to pay for nothing.

I am a fan of the first starcraft, this made me want to buy the second when it came out. The new one is much better than the first, cinematic scenes throughout campaign are much more common than in the first. Also, with the new [...] system, I get matched up against challenging opponents that aren't necessarily more skilled than I am, meaning every match is for the most part is fair. A major problem with the original starcraft is I would log on, and within seconds be told "Oh I got the noob on my team" and my teammate would immediately bail. Because I am not forced to play with people at different skill levels the game is considerably less one sided than in the original.
Campaign can be adjusted based on skill level. In the first one I had difficulty with it, I felt it was less newcomer friendly. The new campaign difficult levels are accurate.
I love the game, better graphics, more units, campaign is so fun I actually want to play it a second time.

The only reason I gave 2 stars is because of the boxing parts which are pretty fun, but I can get that in the original game.

The ability to use two remotes is my favorite thing about it. That is an awesome feature!!! ¢¾

Lots of fun and a great workout
Allows time for a check of heart rate
Dislikes:

~ August 30, 2010 ~ Nutwiisystem.Com from New York, NY USA said:Excellent collection of dancing, boxing, and mini-games
When Gold's Gym Cardio Workout first came out a year and a half ago, it pushed the bar forward and helped prove that there was a market for Wii Fitness Games. So the question is, does its sequel do the same? I'm happy to report the answer is yes.
Gold Gym Dance Workout consists of three main types of exercises: a pure "dance workout", a "boxing workout", and "mini-games".
In the "dance workout", you perform fast-moving choreographed dance steps using your arms and feet. It's not exactly like "Just Dance" in that the choreography doesn't really contain any "signature moves" for the song. Rather, the dance is made up of a series of basic latin dance steps (i.e., merengue, samba, salsa, reggaeton, and cumbia). You first go through a series of tutorials to learn the steps, and then you put them together through beginner, intermediate, and advanced stages of increasing difficulty and speed. Just as you'd do in a dance class at the gym, you follow the lead of an on-screen workout instructor shouting out steps to you to the beat.
In the "boxing workout", the game has come a long way since its predecessor. Again following an on-screen instructor, you upper-cut, jab, punch, and hook to the beat of music. And thankfully, Ubisoft decided to license a whole slew of popular songs, so you're not stuck to boxing to "Eye of the Tiger" over and over and over. The motion controls are remarkably accurate in detecting specific boxing moves, and the workouts were fast-moving and fun.
I admit that I loved the "mini games". Unlike other fitness games where minigames are an afterthought, Ubisoft seems to have put a lot of thought into these, and I love the touches of humor in the games. There are a variety of new and original mini-games, you can dodge charging bulls (ducking from side to side while holding your Wii remotes), try to balance yourself on a bucking bull (on the balance board), canoeing (using a combination of your Wii motes as a double-plated paddle while sitting on the balance board) and running (basically making rapid punching movements, made more interesting when you get chased by the occasional lion!). There are also a few games clearly borrowed from Wii Fit and Wii Sports resort (chopping things with a samauri sword, boxing a kangaroo, and karate-chopping certain items).
You can either jump into the various workouts immediately, or have your virtual trainer prepare a weekly workout routine for you. You can also choose two-player mode, which lets you exercise along with a friend (there will be two trainers on the screen, and when each person follows their trainer, not only can they compete to see who scores the highest, but to the casual bystander it looks like they're doing a cool latin dance together).
One thing I was impressed with was the accuracy of its controls, which is head and shoulders above previous Wii exercise games. It allows for the use of two Wii remotes. That Ubisoft eschews the use of the nunchuk is a good sign that they've taken accuracy in motion controls more seriously than they have in the past.
The one big thing I wasn't crazy about at first was how very difficult it was to follow and learn the dance steps. The first few times you play the dance workout games, even at the tutorial level it's very easy to get very overwhelmed. You have to basically follow the on-screen trainer and mirror the moves she's making, but she's moving so fast that it's incredibly difficult to follow, especially trying to do it in a mirror image. They provide a series of video and audio cues to help you, but it's still terribly difficult to follow her feet and to match them to yours.
The good news is, for each dance they offer a "practice" mode which breaks down the dance into different sections, lets you review each section, with three different camera angles to view the instruction, and lets you view the whole thing in slow motion. I would definitely suggest playing the entirely in "practice mode" until you get the arm and leg movements down and memorized, and then proceed to the workout. This may take days or even weeks for each song, so if you don't have the time or inclination to do this, you might be disappointed. On the other hand, once you commit the moves to memory, they're yours to do over and over again. And it probably goes without saying that you need a LOT of room.
And so while the game isn't for everyone, I think it's a great new Wii fitness title after a very long string of disappointing ones. Once again, Ubisoft has set the bar, let's hope upcoming fitness titles like EA Sports Active 2, Zumba Fitness, and the Dance Dance Revolution reboot continue to move the bar forward.

Compared to last year the game-play is much better but it sacrifices franchise options. The online options are much better so if you play online and enjoy better game-play you will like this game but if you only do franchise then you will be upset. Also create a player is terrible but madden moments are pretty cool. Definitely a switch from last year where you needed a good quarterback and could survive with an average running back and average offensive line. This year you need a very good running back and an above average offensive line but can get by with an accurate but average QB. Going across the middle is a little to easy but running the ball and going deep is tough. sprint is gone but I actually like it, there is also a game-call mode where they pick the play for you if you want which saves you time, also you don't need to wait to watch cut-scenes and you can play a game in about 2/3 of the time that you could last year, which is nice. I don't see why they took away so many of the franchise options and create a player options because they don't seem to complicated for the programmers. I like it but every year I am still ticked off at EA by how they are charging us $60 and have tons of in game advertisements, either put more money into a complete game or drop the price of the game. overall I would grade the game a B+ due to value of replay, would have gotten an A if the franchise options and create a player options were not taken out.

Each year, this company comes out with a new marketing gimmick for this game.. Last year it was "If you see it on Sunday, You'll see it in Madden." So that means, instead of fixing the gameplay and animations and truly progressing the series forward, they added things like guys playing cornhole before the game, or people waiting in line for merchandise.. This year, their gimmicks are: "Locomotion", and "Play Games in Half the Time." First of all, Locomotion is worthless. The players still move exactly as they did last year. Second of all, Play Games in Half the Time refers to the player shutting the game off half way through, because they're fed up with this crap.
I thought that with Backbreaker coming out, Madden would've gotten a bit of a kick in the pants to get going, but no. They released the exact same game as last year, only with the pre-snap controls made more complicated and updated rosters.
The same five tackles from last year happen again this year. If you dive tackle at a QB, you'll float in mid air next touching the QBs body until after he completes the pass, then it goes into the sack animation. This game is really pathetic and feels like a giant lateral from last year. Same thing all over again, same problems, new marketing gimmicks.

Galaxy 2 does everything for the most part perfect. The return of Yoshi is by far my favorite thing about this game, and Nintendo treated Yoshi very good in this game. Each Galaxy is different and fun in it's own way. Bowser looks amazing in this game, but I think the Bowser battles in Galaxy 1 are better than the battle in this game. The music is great in this game but once again I think galaxy 1 had better music. Galaxy 2 is a great game though and is probably my 2nd or 3rd favorite game of all time. I have played video games for over 20 years and this is near the very top of my list. Mario Galaxy 2 puts the crown back on Mario's head as the ultimate king of games, and shows everyone that the hero in a game does not need a gun to be the best around. Mario Galaxy 2 is an amazing game that has 242 stars to collect in all and will challenge you more than any other 3D Mario game. I bought the Super Mario Galaxy 2 game for my four year old grandson's birthday because he liked another Mario Wii game so much. Although the game is very eye appealing, Little Bobby found Galaxy 2 a bit more challenging at the beginning, which made me nervous. However, as he gets more familiar with it, he loves the game and goes into great detail about the challenges he is having on the various planets. He does not appear to be frustrated with defeats...and he relishes his conquests. His five year old cousin Chase even enjoys being an advisor to LB as he plays the game. I am extremely satisfied with this game. Each planet is different enough in look and feel to provide interest for any age level. It can be tough to beat if you're not a gamer geek, but the beauty of the game and it's addictive nature keeps you playing while you get the experience to come up to speed. Although two people can play the game, it really seems designed for one, in my opinion. This is a two handed game, requiring that you connect the numchuck (sic?). LB had no problem mastering the two handed requirement, although he seems to be a natural with the WII (he holds his own in bowling and tennis). I highly recommend this game...whether you have kids or not.

I bought this game for my son after playing super mario galaxy, we had to have the second edition! It reminds me so much of my first Nintendo-back in the late 80's! The music is almost the same and the ghost world too!.. but it's so much more challenging! We have a family challenge going on right now. This is a great game that you won't lose interest in!

Madden 11 is OK.Cant say better than 10,didnt get it last year.I decided to skip a year with Madden, like EA should do,and come out with Madden 13 in two years. Its about the same as Madden 09,with a few less features. If Madden was like MLB 10 The Show, then it would be the bomb.Hey,I just bought Madden to get the 20$ off to buy NHL 11,the real EA game to get.If NHL 11 is as good as NHL 10,thats the game we should be waiting for every year.Madden, take next year off, provide roster update, and not for 60$,and lets wait for 2K to get back into making football games.

Watered down, terrible game. Worth $20 at most. The same Madden, only with less features. I miss the icons for speed players, great hands, etc. Please don't make the mistake (like I did) to support this declining franchise.
~ August 26, 2010 ~ Mark Jwain from Kansas City, MO USA said:Very shallow
Most everyone has played a game in the Madden series. That's exactly the problem with Madden 11: If you've played Madden in the last 5 years, you've played this one.
Graphically and in terms of gameplay, very little has changed in several years. Of course, a new feature or two is introduced each time around, but it's essentially the same game with a roster update. It feels as though EA is pushing everyone to online play, and forsaking all else.
Franchise and Be A Superstar modes are very shallow. In fact, they are even more shallow than they once were. There's very little fun to be had in Be A Superstar when you can't choose your team, you're locked into multiple seasons with the team that drafts you, and there's zero depth beyond playing the games.
I don't think I will be purchasing Madden in the future - I owned Madden 11 for 2-3 days before trading it in. That was all the time it took for me to be "done" with it.

I bought this model for our elderly in-laws to be used mostly for movie playing and various multi-media projects. It serves its purpose well and it does not disappoint.
BUT, if this is going to be your GAMING console and you can afford to pay an extra $100, I would suggest that you wait for the mid-September release of the PS3 MOVE bundle and this is why:
- DOUBLE HDD capacity: 320 GB vs. this model's relatively puny 160 GB
- MOVE controller (in addition to the tradition DualShock)
- Eye camera
- Sports Champions game
If you believe that double HDD capacity (practically eliminates the need to upgrade to a larger disk) and the included add-ons plus the game are worth the extra $100, and I do, then it's worth waiting for a few days. (I wrote this on Sep. 3, 2010)
Other than that, this is essentially the PlayStation 3 120 GB with a larger HDD. Please see reviews there for details.
This model gets 4 stars not because there's anything wrong with in - in fact I bought one - but for it's somewhat confusing marketing. So, to clarify:
- Do NOT buy the 120 GB model under any circumstances, the 160 GB gives you a larger hard drive for the same price.
- Buy this 160 GB and save $100 if you are not planning to play games, especially MOVE games.
- Buy the MOVE bundle otherwise, available in mid-September (I already ordered one)

According to the official forums, I'm supposed to troubleshoot it by holding the power button for 10 seconds which does nothing, and it's making a weird noise. So my only options are to send it in to Sony and wait 3 weeks, get it repaired at a shop or open it myself with a screwdriver voiding the warranty (which will cost $170 anyways according to support?)
I think I'm just going to follow my friends and PSJailbreak my PS3 so I won't have to buy games again, ever. This is ridiculous.

I just picked up the new 160gb PS3 and am very pleased with the console. I already own a launch 60gb version, but I wanted another to use primarily as a blu-ray player in the family room. Everything that was good in the 60gb version is available with this new one (except for backward compatibility and installation of other OS of course). The unit works very well. It is quieter than my 60gb version, if that's even possible. It still puts out some heat though, so make sure it's properly ventilated. Blu-ray movies look and sound great via HDMI. Streaming Netflix is easy via wifi. I've not had any slow downs or hiccups with the service. It still requires the use of the Netflix disc though. It would be nice if you could just download and install Netflix as an app. It's not a big deal for me since I'll probably just keep the disc in the drive. I don't plan on gaming much with this version. Unfortunately, it does not come with an HDMI cable. It comes with a measly composite cable. Despite a few disappointments, this new PS3 is still a fantastic blu-ray player and all-around media center.

| The fourth generation of hardware released for the PlayStation 3 entertainment platform, the PlayStation 3 160GB system is the next stage in the evolution of Sony's console gaming powerhouse. Loaded with a mix of multimedia features and functions available on earlier PlayStation 3 models, as well as a series of new advancements and refinements, the PlayStation 3 160GB system is destined to push the envelope in the realm of Next-Generation entertainment. .caption { font-family: Verdana, Helvetica neue, Arial, serif; font-size: 10px; font-weight: bold; font-style: italic; } ul.indent { list-style: inside disc; text-indent: -15px; } table.callout { font-family: verdana; font-size: 11px; line-height: 1. 3em; } td.vgoverview { height: 125px; background: #9DC4D8 url(http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/electronics/detail-page/callout-bg.png) repeat-x; border-left: 1px solid #999999; border-right: 1px solid #999999; padding-left: 20px; padding-right: 20px; padding-bottom: 10px; width: 250px; font-family: verdana; font-size: 12px; }
As with previous models, the PlayStation 3 160GB system features an IBM "Cell" processor and a co-developed NVIDIA graphics processor that together allow the system to perform two trillion calculations per second. Yet the 160GB system manages to improve on this with its 45nm version of the processor, which although running at the same 60+nm speed as previous PS3 versions, uses less energy. This makes the unit's smaller size and quieter fan possible. Along with the traditional AV and composite connections, the 160GB system also boasts an HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) port, which delivers uncompressed, unconverted digital picture and sound to compatible high-definition TVs and projectors. (The system is capable of 128-bit pixel precision and 1080p resolution for a full HD experience) This console also provides for an extreme sound experience by supporting Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1, as well as Linear PCM 7.1. Finally, it features cross connectivity with your PC network and PlayStation Portable (PSP) and its pre-installed, 160GB hard disc drive allows you to save games as well as download content from The Internet. Unlike The some other models of The PlayStation 3, The 160GB system does not offer backwards compatibility.
PlayStation 3 utilizes The Blu-ray disc media format, which gives you The best high-definition viewing experience on your television, by way of The format's ability to hold six times as much data as traditional DVDs. This tremendous capacity, combined with The awesome power of The system's processor and graphics card, promises an endless stream of mind-blowing games, and other multimedia content. This doesn't mean though that The PS3 is limited to Blu-ray discs. It also supports CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD+R formats. In addition, PlayStation 3 system software includes BD Live support that allows you to play discs that support Blu-ray Disc Profile 2.0 (BD-LIVE), meaning you can also connect to The Internet while playing discs that support this format to obtain additional features. And of course PS3 owners also receive free access to The PlayStation Network (PSN), where through The PlayStation Store and PlayStation Home, they can download games, game demos, movies, and other content, as well as chat with friends, play mini-games, compete in tournaments and explore dedicated game spaces. The new super Mario Wii is terrible. It would be a lot of fun, if we didn't have to go back to the first entry into the game every time Mario is killed. A person can repeat a difficult game many, many times. An idiot planned this game.
~ August 23, 2010 ~ Ann said:One Big Missed Opportunity
To note - I've only played up to the 3rd World. If anything changes as I progress through the game, I'll update this review. But right now, I'm just too bored with the game to continue on.
So basically, this game is an updated mix-up of earlier Mario games. Here's a break-down:
Super Mario Bros: The individual levels, some of the enemies, and the overall difficulty level are on-par with SMB. Many of the original enemies have returned with little change, such as the Hammer Bros., Bullet Bill, Koopa Troopas, the Piranha Plant, and of course Goombas. Many of the levels mirror those of the original as well, with tight-jumps that require a good judge of distance and even the castle maze from the last level. Mario's death and death music are also from SMB. So is the Underworld Theme.
Yoshi's Island: The collection of red coins and Dragon coins are both present, as are variations of the mini-games. Yoshi's ability to float, and the ability to jump-stomp are also here. A magikoopa from Yoshi's Island, probably Kamek, returns to aid the Koopalings in boss battles just like he did with the bosses in YI.
Super Mario World: The map screen/overworld, some of the levels, and some of the enemies return from SMW. The Ghost Houses are here, too. The save feature, first introduced in SMW I believe, also returns, with an added quick-save feature.
The quick-save feature doesn't actually work for me, but when I can save after each mini-fortress or boss, it doesn't really matter and is largely unneeded.
Super Mario Bros. 3: The Koopalings, first introduced in SMB3, are updated and brought back as bosses of each region. Other aspects from SMB3 that are present are: the Koopa Airship, the matching card game, the Hammer Bros on the map screen, both the item and game toad houses, the way the map screen itself functions, power-up collection and use, Mario Suits, and probably many other things I can't recall right now.
Why this isn't a 5 Star game . . .
1. Yoshi is way too scarce. He's only in a handful of levels, and he cannot (to my knowledge) be used outside of those levels. That's not okay when riding Yoshi is half the fun. Super Mario World had the perfect balance of Yoshi-use, and this game totally screwed that up. I took off an entire star for poor Yoshi management.
2. You have to actually drop Toad in order to go through a pipe. Why? What possible reason could there be for this?
3. The music, excluding a few updated tunes like SMB3's Hammer Bros. Battle Theme, was uninspiring, bland, and just awful. And there wasn't enough variety. After the first handful of stages in the first region, I was beginning to wonder if there would ever be a change in music.
4. Variety of gameplay. So far, it's almost the exact same formula as SMB3 - stage, stage, stage, toad house, stage, overworld enemy, mini fortress, stage, toad house, stage, boss.
That was fine 20 years ago on a system with limited resources; it's not fine today on a system that could have done a lot more if the creators wanted to go so retro. They went TOO retro, I think . . . and failed to add enough new and novel ideas that would have augmented the old formula AND showcased the Wii. Yes, the graphics are nice. But, they probably aren't anything the Gamecube could not have pulled off. Possibly even the N64, to be honest. And that's sad that they didn't take full advantage of the Wii.
5. Controls. The return to the original controls is great. But why not at least use the B button when it's RIGHT THERE!? One of my fingers even rests on the B button during gameplay, so why wasn't it utilized at all? I get the A button not being used - it's a little awkward to reach, but the B button? Yoshi could have thrown eggs with that button, or it could have been used to zoom in or out. Another missed opportunity.
6. It's not Super Mario World. Any game that tries so hard to recreate the fun of earlier games needs to be at least as good as Super Mario World, and then it can build on that. But this game just doesn't live up to SMW, or SMB3 for that matter. What made those games 5-star games was the fact that they both pushed the envelope, and implemented fresh ideas and new ways of doing things. And they both had plenty of variety throughout the game.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii didn't do that. It simply relied on previous incarnations and really only added a few shakes of the controller. And that's okay . . . for a 3 star, [...] game that's nothing more than an update on the classics.
But to call it 'New'? No. Not even close. More like a Super Mario All-Stars Wii.
Still, this is a quality game that a great deal of effort went into. So despite its failure to surpass previous installments, and despite it being geared toward younger children, it still deserves 4 stars.
~ August 22, 2010 ~ T. Williams from Colorado, USA said:Another strong entry in the mario series
As outlined in the product description, this game plays very much like the original Super Mario Bros. (or perhaps most like Super Mario 3), but it has sharp, colorful, detailed graphics that are at home on the latest Nintendo console. If you're a moderately skilled gamer, you'll likely find that playing alone is much easier than playing simultaneously with others. When others are involved, it's very easy to knock other players off ledges, or otherwise interfere with carefully timed jumps. But if you're not playing too seriously, trying to gather every last coin and bonus, I find that the frenzied gameplay of having multiple players is actually more fun than going solo.

We have been wanting this game for awhile. First of all, it's great that you can play with up to 4 players at the same time, helping or hindering. Quickly we were having fun recognizing level/locations, characters from all the previous Mario games with enhanced graphics. It was a blast trying to remember how to do certain things or beat bosses. Of course lots of frustrations as well, but no controller throwing like when I was a kid. This game is a lot of fun and anyone who has played the originals and liked them will love this. Of course it's a great game for people new to it as well.
Developers at Nintendo have dreamed of creating a simultaneous multiplayer Super Mario Bros. game for decades. The Wii console finally makes that dream come true for everyone with New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Supporting 2-4 players in side-scrolling co-op and competitive platforming action, and featuring a mix of fan favorites and new characters, new powerups and various input options via the Wii Remote, it is destined to become an instant classic in one of the most beloved game franchises of all-time. .caption { font-family: Verdana, Helvetica neue, Arial, serif; font-size: 10px; font-weight: bold; font-style: italic; } ul.indent { list-style: inside disc; text-indent: -15px; } table.callout { font-family: verdana; font-size: 11px; line-height: 1. 3em; } td.vgoverview { height: 125px; background: #9DC4D8 url(http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/electronics/detail-page/callout-bg.png) repeat-x; border-left: 1px solid #999999; border-right: 1px solid #999999; padding-left: 20px; padding-right: 20px; padding-bottom: 10px; width: 250px; font-family: verdana; font-size: 12px; }

What I love about this product:
It works for PC and Xbox 360 (since I have both)
A lot of PC games now-a-days support it
It's Wireless and works from a good distance
To me it's comfortable
Easily allows 4 players to play on PC together
What I don't like:
The triggers don't work correctly so they can be an issue mapping (XBOX DEV Morons mapped the triggers on a shared axis- not sure why?)
Battery life is good but batteries are expensive
Needs the wireless adapter to work with PC (you could just buy the one with the adapter at the marked up price at Bestbuy then return just the controller, get your cash back and then buy the controller here :) But that is illegal, SO DON'T DO IT! LOL.
Had no issues syncing this with the wireless adapter or 360- I say get it but realize that the triggers are screwed up!

I know that XBox controllers work. I've played on many of them that were fine. The one I bought, however, was literally falling apart. I've since fixed most of the problems, but now, there is no rubber gripping on my thumbsticks, because the day I got it, most of the rubber was already peeled off and in the bag it came in, leaving my thumbs raw from the rough edges.

I just bought this to replace my old 20gig model and so far I'm happy. An HDMI output is truly welcome and the 250GB drive is wonderful. WiFi is also a great addition.
Unfortunately I had to replace the first one they sent me immediately since the disc drive didn't work. I received the Xbox in Amazon packaging that was too small and didn't allow any protection for the item at all. All that was in there was 2 little packing bubbles that only prevented it from moving side to side (it didn't do anything for moving up and down. There was a punctured hole in box the Amazon and 360 box that I attribute to the non-working Xbox.
After sending it back and getting my replacement, I found it was shipping to me in the exact same sized box with NO packing materials in it at all. The 360 box was free to bang around inside the Amazon box completely unhindered with no padding or protection whatsoever. As evidence of having no protection, the corner of the 360 box was smashed in. To my complete and utter surprise the console still worked properly.
While I love the product, I can't recommend that you buy it from Amazon. Their packing practices are a joke and it's more likely than not that your delicate electronics won't survive the trip.
